Attending Independent Medical Examinations (IME’s)
What is an independent medical examination, or IME?
This is often an additional patient examination to follow up on a primary diagnosis. It is request by an Insurance Company or Attorney for an additional examination to be performed by independent doctor or specialist in order to help answer medical or administrative questions or claims.
An IME request is common with situations involving disability claims, workers’ compensation cases, personal injury lawsuits, and many other scenarios. These cases are not limited to just employer-employee situations either. They may involve personal situations where an individual’s insurance company requests an IME to determine benefit eligibility or continuance.
What We Do at IME’s
Our consultants attend independent medical exams (IME’s) to serve as a professional observer during the exam. We will provide you with exact details when you contact us, however here are some general guidelines to assist you with your research:
- We will silently document the entire IME without any interference.
- We serve as the patient/client representative, as well as an expert witness in a case where we are required to testify in court.
- Once assigned, we will educate the patient on the IME process before the exam, and again when we meet at the actual examination location. All patients/clients are instructed to be truthful during the exam.
- We will record the time from the moment we step into an exam office.
- We observe and document all that we see and hear with written notes. Audio may be used if recordings are permitted by the Physician and Insurance Company.
- We will observe the physical exam to assess whether the doctor performs the correct tests, and if they are done correctly.
Comprehensive Medical Review and Summaries
In this day and age, we see a different physician for each part of out body – Ophthalmology for eyes, Endocrinology for the thyroid, Cardiology for heart conditions etc. How is all of this put together. It should be done by the primary care physician (PCP). Many people feel confused and do not know where to turn. Did everything get completed they way it should have been done?
When asked for a comprehensive medical review, I read and review all the medical reports I receives and complete a written summary of the contents.
When are these done: With a life care plan, at the beginning of a law suit to determine a case.
Analyze and Interpret Medical Records
Document a time line of care that may include physician services, testing, medication.
Life Care Planning
“The life care plan is a dynamic document based upon published standards of practice, comprehensive assessment, data analysis, and research, which provides an organized, concise plan for current and future needs with associated costs for individuals who have experienced catastrophic injury or have chronic health care needs.” (International Academy of Life Care Planners, 2003)

This is a broad category, as research in medical review increases daily. Most frequent requests are pertaining to new and updated materials and testing for individual client. These may include spinal cord stimulators, prosthetics, treatments, or medications.
